About this guide
Saariselkä Tourism is an independent travel guide to Saariselkä, Inari and Ivalo in Finnish Lapland, written for winter visitors. Patrick Kühne, a travel publisher based in Germany, writes and runs it; he also publishes guides to Kiruna, Tromsø and Rovaniemi.
Not the official tourist organisation
This site has no connection to the Municipality of Inari, to the ski resort or to the regional tourism company. The official tourist organisation for the area is Lapland North Destinations at laplandnorth.fi. According to the municipality, the company behind it, Inari-Saariselkä Tourism Ltd, handles the travel marketing of the area and is partly owned by the municipality together with local businesses. The municipality's own tourist information answers questions on weekdays and points travellers to the same website. For timetables, events, trail conditions and anything official, their information comes first.
Where the facts come from
Sun and twilight times, temperatures, snow depths, distances, timetables, opening hours and dates on this site come from official or primary sources. Among them are Lapland North Destinations, the Municipality of Inari, Metsähallitus (which manages the national parks), the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finavia, the Siida museum, the Sámi Parliament in Finland, bus operators and the US Naval Observatory for sun and twilight times. Each page lists the sources it relies on, and we checked them in October 2026.
Some figures are our own averages from the open weather data of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, such as monthly temperatures in the village. Those are marked as approximate. When two sources disagree, for example on the number of islands in Lake Inari, we give the more cautious figure or drop the detail.
How the site is funded
The tour cards and comparison tables link to GetYourGuide and, for a few tours not listed there, to Viator. If you book through one of these links, the booking platform pays us a commission. You pay the same price as you would without the link. Prices and ratings are loaded from the platform and are not written by us.
We are not a tour operator and do not sell tours ourselves. For a change or a refund, contact the platform where you booked or the operator named on the tour card.
How tours are picked
We list tours that run in winter, start in Saariselkä, Ivalo or Inari or collect guests there, and match the topic of the page. Duration, meeting point, age limits and what is included come from the tour pages. Tours that start elsewhere in Lapland are left out, and a tour drops off the site automatically when the platform stops offering it.
Sámi culture is described along the guidelines for responsible tourism published by the Sámi Parliament in Finland. We do not list products that the Parliament names as offensive, such as so-called Lapland baptisms.
Photos
The photos come from Unsplash. Some were taken around Saariselkä and Inari, others elsewhere in the Arctic and only illustrate an activity. Each caption sticks to what is visible in the picture and credits the photographer.
